Academic Programs
 
Maddox provides a great academic program which accentuates reading, writing, and math. The Colorado Basic Literacy Act is the basis for the literacy and numeracy curriculum in kindergarten through third grade. Science and Social studies are embedded in this curriculum. The fourth and fifth grades follow the Colorado State Standards for reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.
 
The Six Trait Writing Model is used to develop student writers. The six traits include ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions.
 
Readers-Writers Workshop is the literacy program at Maddox.
 
Homework, Monday through Thursday, is a natural part of the e academic program. Students are expected to continue learning and practicing what they have learned after the school day has ended.
 
 
 
 
Special Programs
 
Maddox Elementary provides additional reading instruction to students working below grade level proficiency through a Title I reading program and the school reading specialist. Special education services are provided for identified students. Additional services are offered in speech/ language development, occupational therapy, and gifted/ talented education. Maddox is the district center school for students with severe/ profound handicapping conditions.
 
• Students will now have Art and Music by semesters. Starting with Art the first semester, followed by Music the second semester.
 
• Our Physical Education program stresses student fitness and overall good health. Students have PE every other day.
 
• Maddox Elementary in partnership with the Metropolitan State College of Denver provides the opportunity for the presence of students in the MSCD teacher preparation program to be mentored by Maddox teachers. This program provides excellent collaboration and reflection on the best practices in elementary education.
 
 
 
This building is named in honor of Herbert Franklin Maddox for his contribution to education and community life in the city of Englewood. He was the trustee on the first Town Council which was incorporated and named the city of Englewood. Mr. Maddox served as one of the first board members in school district number 7. He served as member and president of the board for 16 years. Mr. Maddox was a civic leader, a leader in education, and gave a great deal of his time and money to help the city of Englewood and its schools.
